Poetry: Muslim Christmas

It sat downstairs on the air hockey table,
its shedding needled branches, its copper wire arms.
With care, our mother draped its false twigs in silver
garlands, two for a dollar on the clearance rack,
and the ornaments–her mother’s, long dead–
we cradled in our palms like baby Jesus might have
been held, our non-savior swathed in hay in the barn-crib, safe
and human.

The stars remember you

Poetry: Burdens

Already my daughter’s looks
are something to bear.
Gold hair heavy
on her small shoulders.
Eyes big as burdens.

She can’t escape
people looking at her,
so lets bangs grow
over her face
like thick curtains
almost closed.

Once, on the street,
a man touched
the glowing tip
of his cigarette
right to the center
of her forehead.

A crazy man, you say.
But I know
it was beauty
leaving its hot kiss.

Skincare Routine For Dry Acne-Prone Skin

washing-face

A good basic skincare routine is cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize. A lot of beauty bloggers swear that toning is also a necessary step, but others claim the opposite, and personally I haven’t found it to make a huge difference in my skin’s condition thus far.

1. CLEANSE. Currently I trade off between Fresh’s Soy Face Cleanser and Burt’s Bees Orange Essence Facial Cleanser. The former is a dream, the gentlest cleanser I’ve ever come across but also effective, removing makeup, dirt, and oil effortlessly. It’s a light, clear cream that feels wonderful going on my skin, and perhaps my favorite part is that I can get it even in my eyes and it won’t sting – it’s that gentle. Hands-down my favorite cleanser for removing makeup, and one of my preferred ones overall.

Beauty Review: NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil In Dragon Girl

Picked up this combination lipstick/lip color at Sephora. It was actually my first lip pencil so I wanted to choose carefully, and went with this partly because of rave reviews from beauty bloggers, and partly because NARS is a brand that I trust (the Orgasm blush? It’s been said a thousand times already, but it’s an absolute must for any beauty collection).
